The Harker Heights Friends of the Library will conduct its fall book sale on Saturday to benefit library programs and child literacy.

The book sale is from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in room A of the Harker Heights Activities Center, 400 Indian Trail.

"It gives the Friends of the Library the funds that we give to the library to help with programs," Friends president Sue Dunlap said Tuesday. "The profits go back to providing books for people that need them, such as children."

The organization has been collecting books for this sale since its last book sale in the spring.

"We have a much larger selection of books this year than we have had in the past, and I think that is because everyone is so excited about our new library," Dunlap said.

Books for sale include cookbooks, fiction books of all genres, books for young adults, nonfiction books, textbooks and self-help books. The Friends are also selling DVDs, books on tape, CDs and videos.

Profits from this event in the past have gone to the "Have Book Will Read Program," library director Lisa Youngblood said.

This program puts books in the hands of all sorts of people to improve their reading skills, Youngblood said.

A local Boy Scout troop also will help raise funds by holding a bake sale at the book sale.

The Friends will continue to accept donations of books, DVDs, and audio books at the library until 10 a.m. the day of the sale.

"From the library's standpoint, it is very encouraging to know that our community supports us so readily," Youngblood said.
